The CD-ROM

Each category has a browsable main index, with entries arranged in alphabetical order. An alphabetical index to acronyms appearing in the Directory entries has also been included for reference purposes.

There are also eight browsable search indexes:

Collections
Co-operative Schemes
County
Institution
Name
Postcode
Subject
Town

Collections

13,800 indexed terms; 15,700 entries
Includes all major named collections, including books and pamphlets, archival and manuscript collections, personal and family papers, business records, diocesan and parish records, estate archives, and others. Common collections (e.g., collections of BSI standards) and collections held as part of a co-operative scheme (e.g., LASER or GLASS) are also listed. Where possible, some indication has been given of the subject matter of the collection.

Collections named after a specific individual have been indexed both by first name or initials and by surname, e.g., "Aaron Copland Collection" and "Copland, Aaron, Collection".

Co-operative Schemes

840 indexed terms; 6,600 entries
Includes all major co-operative schemes listed by the libraries, such as regional library schemes, consortia and specialist groups. Entries are listed under their full names and under their acronyms. For instance, to find libraries involved in the British Medical Association's co-operative scheme, select "British Medical Association" or "BMA". If the co-operative scheme or the institution running it also has an entry, then that entry will also be found and displayed. For instance, a search for "British Medical Association" will also turn up the entry for the BMA's own library.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive index, as many libraries do not list in full all of the schemes in which they are involved. This means that in many cases a search on this index will turn up only some, rather than all, of the libraries involved in the scheme.

County

239 indexed terms; 13,500 entries
All entries have been indexed under administrative and/or geographical county. For example, for libraries in the Tyneside area, look under "Tyne and Wear".

Please note that branch and associate libraries are also included in this index. Consequently, searches may throw up entries for institutions which are not in fact situated in the selected county, although one or more of their branches are.

Institution

5,900 indexed terms; 18,300 entries
This index contains the names of the institutions to whom the libraries and organisations belong. Institutions listed include local authorities, government offices, universities and colleges, research associations, corporations, private and professional bodies, churches and many others. Possible variants on the institution name are also included. For instance, if you want to find all entries for libraries belonging to the University of Cambridge, select either "Cambridge University" or "University of Cambridge". Acronyms of institution names are also listed, so to find all entries belonging to the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, select either "Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals" or "CILIP".

Name

12,000 indexed terms; 12,600 entries
A full listing of the names of all the libraries and organisations included in the Directory. Also included are numerous associate or branch libraries which do not have their own entries. Possible variants on the name are also included. For instance, if you want to find Cambridge University's Squire Law Library, try selecting "Cambridge University, Squire Law Library" or "University of Cambridge, Squire Law Library" or just "Squire Law Library". Acronyms are also listed, so to find the entry for the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, select either "Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals" or "CILIP".

Postcode

10,100 indexed terms; 17,200 entries
Entries for UK libraries and organisations have been indexed by postcode. Both full postcodes and the first part of the code indicating the postal area have been listed. For instance, to find an entry with the postcode "NW1 5DG", you can either select the full postcode or just "NW1".

Please note that branch and associate libraries are also included in this index. Consequently, searches may throw up entries for institutions which are not in fact situated in the selected postcode area, although one or more of their branches are.

Subject

13,100 indexed terms; 60,100 entries
An extensive index of the subjects covered by each library's and archive's main holdings, as well as subjects of major special collections. Also included are generic types of archival holdings, such as local authority archives, diocesan archives, parish records, family papers, personal papers, estate archives, business records, hospital records and others. Subjects are cross-indexed wherever possible. For instance, to find libraries that cover the subject "public administration", you could look under either "public administration", or "administration, public". A search on a more general subject term will also include specialisations within that subject, so a search on "administration" will also find entries for "public administration", "health administration", and other administrative specialisations.

Please note that some libraries may list their subjects quite generally, while others may be more specific. This means that this index, although extensive, cannot always be completely exhaustive.

Town

2,100 indexed terms; 9,200 entries
All entries have been indexed by town. For instance, to find libraries in Aberystwyth, simply select "Aberystwyth".

Please note that branch and associate libraries are also included in this index. Consequently, searches may throw up entries for institutions which are not in fact situated in the selected town, although one or more of their branches are.
